[직장인 영어회화] 링글 수업 복습(3) - 실리콘밸리의 업무문화

 언어를 배우는 것은 그 나라의 문화를 배우는 것이기도 한 것 같아요. 

 

 이번 편은 주제 자체가 새로웠던  '실리콘밸리의 업무 문화' 편을 복습해보고자 합니다. 

 

 

제목 - Hustle Culture, Go big or go home 

 

미국의 직장문화 중 Hustle Culture라는게 있다고 하네요. hustle의 사전적 의미를 찾아보았는데요. 

 

HUSTLE
1. [동사] (사람을 거칠게) 떠밀다[밀치다]
2. [동사] (결정을 내리도록) 재촉하다
3. [명사] 법석, 혼잡

 

그렇다면 Hustle culture 는 뭔가 '거친 회사 문화'를 지칭하는 걸까요?  이러한 물음표를 가지고 시작해보시죠~

 

교재 내용

 

- Hustle Culture, a widely recognized phenomenon, promotes a fast-paced and aggressive work environment that urges individuals to work tirelessly. This influence is often conspicuous and results in extended work hours, constant preoccupation with work even on off-days, and a sense of urgency to complete tasks swiftly. Unfortunately, this culture may lead to burnout, reduced work-life equilibrium, and the development of various physical and mental illnesses associated with chronic stress.

허슬 문화는 개인들이 끊임없이 일하도록 재촉하는 빠르고 공격적인 업무 환경을 촉진합니다. 이 영향력은 종종 뚜렷하며, 연장 근무 시간, 휴일에도 일에 대한 계속적인 집착, 업무를 신속하게 완료해야 한다는 긴급성을 불러일으킵니다. 불행하게도 이러한 문화는 승산 불균형, 직장에서 벗어나는 시간이 줄어들고, 만성적인 스트레스와 관련된 다양한 신체적, 정신적 질병으로 이어질 수 있습니다.

 

'허슬 문화'라고 하는 것이 가족, 여가 등 인생의 다른 어떤 가치보다도 일, 성취 등을 더 중요시 여기는 그런 문화라고 하네요. 

 

교재 중 허슬 문화 관련하여 언급된 두 개의 동기부여 문구(motivational quote)을 함께 알아볼까요? 

"Go big or go home"
 크게 베팅할거 아니면 그만둬

- 이 표현은 무언가 시도할 때 최대한의 노력을 기울여 좋은 결과를 이루어야 하며, 그렇지 않으면 시도할 필요가 없다는 의미입니다.  안전한 선택이나 대충 하는 것보다 대담한 목표를 추구하고 위험을 감수하는 것을 장려합니다.
- 이 표현은 대담한 행동을 취하도록 유도하거나 성공이나 업적을 추구하기 위해 자신의 한계를 끌어올리도록 장려하는 데 자주 사용됩니다.

"Work hard, play hard."
열심히 일하고 열심히 놀아라 

- 이 표현은 일할 때는 최선을 다하고, 쉴 때는 최대한 즐겁게 놀아야 한다는 의미입니다.
- 일과 쉬는 것을 분명히 구분하면서도, 두 가지를 모두 소화할 수 있는 능력을 기르라는 것을 말합니다.
- 이 표현은 열심히 일하고 놀며 균형 있는 삶을 살기 위해 장려하는 데 자주 사용됩니다.

도전, 끈기, 근면성실함, 열정 등을 강조하는 허슬 문화가 우리나라의 업무문화와 크게 다르지 않아보이긴 하는데요. 

 

교재에서는 허슬문화가 실리콘밸리 등 몇몇 업계의 눈부신 혁신과 발전에 큰 기여를 했지만 개인에게 미치는 악영향도 많았다는 어조로 표현이 되어 있더라구요. 과거에는 hustle culture가 경제발전이나 개인의 성공을 위해서 도움이 되는 것으로 여겨졌다면 요즘에는 단점이 더 많다는 식으로 인식이 되고 있는 것 같습니다.

영상 내용 요약: 

• Hustle culture promotes the idea that success, wealth, and happiness come from sacrificing everything else in life working as hard as possible.

• Research shows that this singular focus can have dangerous health consequences, from lack of sleep to chronic stress.

• Hustle culture also has a darker side, where we begin to see our friends and family as superfluous (없어도 되는) and people as utility pieces to help us make more money.

• Neglecting our social needs fundamentally cripples(심각한 손상을 주다) our ability to be productive towards our goals.

• Genuine human connection is as vital to a successful life as sleep and exercise.

• We need feel and have our social needs met in order to function as human beings.

• We need to be intentional about designing a good life that includes human connection.

이 영상에서는 hustle culture가 단순히 건강에 해가 되는것이 아니라 우리가 가족/친구와 맺는 관계를 소홀하게 만듦으로서 근본적인 사회적 욕구를 채우지 못하게 하여 생산성을 떨어뜨리고 오히려 성공과 멀어지게 만든다고 역설을 하였네요. 

 

그럼 이러한 배경지식을 가지고 교정내용을 같이 볼까요?

질문: What part of the reading resonated with you most?

 

교재 내용 중에 어떤 내용이 가장 와닿느냐라는 단골 질문인데,  저는 허슬 문화에 대해서는 잘 모르겠지만 업무에 몰입할 수 있는 만드는 환경을 만들어주려는 실리콘 밸리 회사들 덕분에 우리 회사도 좋은 영향을 받은 것 같다라고 말했습니다.

I wasn't really familiar with the word hustle culture but as I read the article the part that resonated the most with me was that silicon valley's workplace has influenced many other companies as well and my company / was influenced by silicon valley workplace. We have a variety of meal choices and lots of different in-house services that make life easier and help us focus our attention to work.

==> Although I wasn't familiar with the term (word) "hustle culture" prior to reading the article, after reading it the part that resonated with me the most was the widespread influence that Silicon Valley's companies have across the tech industry. For example, I work in IT, and my company receives (is influenced by) the influence of Silicon Valley. For example, at work, our company provides us with several meal options and other services that we can take advantage of to be our best (the best worker possible).

 

제가 생각하는대로 말을 하며 문장을 길게 쭉 흘리는 버릇이 있는데 튜터가 고쳐준 것을 보면 Although / For example 등을 써가면서 문장과 문장 사이에 아이디어들을 연결한 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 

 

이렇게 하면 듣는 사람한테 앞으로 말할 내용에 대한 힌트를 줄 수 있어서 문장을 나누더라도 흐름이 좋아지는 것 같네요.

 

파란색 부분은 같은 말을 좀더 수려한 표현으로 바꾼 것입니다. 제가 influenced라는 동사형을 계속 쓴데 반해 교정된 부분에서는 " widespread influence" 라고 명사형으로 바꿔서 좀더 명료하고 간결하게 표현을 했다. 

 

 

질문: Is hustle culture accessible to everyone, or does it privilege certain groups or individuals? If so, who is left out or disadvantaged?

허슬문화가 모두를 위한 것이냐 아니면 특정 그룹 혹은 개인을 위한 것이냐? 만약 후자라면 누가 소외되었는가? 라는 굉장히 난해한 질문이었는데요. 

 

직무의 특성에 따라서 허슬 문화가 더 도움이 되는 곳이 있고 아닌 곳이 있을 수 있겠다라는 식으로 답변을 하였습니다. 

'노오오력'을 한다고 결과가 달라지지 않는 직무도 있을 것 같습니다. 

So the hustle culture as explained in this article sounds like it pertains to some of the industries that emphasize creativity including IT industry. I think that makes sense because providing such a workplace that is more casual and comfortable will encourage the employees to stay long and maximize their creativity. However, other types of work that are more repetitive and routine may not receive such privilege, maybe because their employers may think that such an investment is not necessary, because such investment may not impact performances. But I think this distinction is just coming from job characteristics.

==> According to the article, hustle culture benefits those who work in creative industries (fields), which includes the IT industry. From my point of view, this is a smart tactic that companies can use to retain employees, as it provides them with the tools for success.

 

이 교정을 받고 충격적이었던건 제가 이렇게 길게 말한 내용이 단 세줄로 줄어들었다는 것이구요 ^^; 

자세히 읽어보면 의미도 좀 달라졌긴 했지만요. 

 

게다가 이전 문장과 마찬가지로 문장 앞단에 문장내용을 유추할 수 있는 linking clause들을 쏙쏙 집어넣어서 듣는 사람이 더 편하게 만들어주었네요. 앞문장과 뒷문장의 관계를 더 명확하게 표시하는데 도움을 주는 것 같습니다. 

앞으로 이렇게 말해봐야겠네요.
